My Story

Hi! am a second year Psychology student at the University of Cambridge who has recently been given a place to volunteer with and is fundraising for Bobbi Bear; a human rights organisation based in Durban, South Africa. I will be volunteering for 4 weeks.

Sadly, South Africa has one of the highest rates of child sexual abuse in the world with reported cases of child abuse increasing by 400% in the last 9 years. These victims are thrown into a criminal justice system that is ill equipped to deal with their well-being. Thus, in addition to their initial trauma, children must also face the struggle of communicating with police officers and a justice system who are not trained to work with abused children and often rape cases never make a court hearing. Bobbi Bear work to fight for children's rights and support children who have been victims of sexual abuse. In my time there:

1. I will be going to emergency call outs and supporting Bobbi Bear child safety officers throughout abuse cases that come in
2. I will be visiting local police stations, hospitals and high court to assist trauma recovery and support victims through the process
3. I will be providing counselling to the children; applying therapeutic models with the use of Bobbi Bear, to obtain forensic facts and evidence to assist the criminal justice process, within the best interests of the child
4. I will participate in lectures at rural schools and raise awareness about sensitive issues such as HIV/AIDS and sexual abuse
5. I will attend a clinic and help develop outreach programs that bring rural communities together to share stories and empower women and children

Donations will go towards on the ground running costs of Bobbi Bear, including things like paying for the medical care of children affected by HIV/AIDS, providing essential food, clothes, transportation, books, pens and providing more safe homes for these children. As a psychology student, I have studied and read about the ways just even simple support mechanisms can create resilience and happy development after trauma. Bobbi Bear provide this support AND more.

Therefore, your donation would be going towards a life-changing cause for a child; reducing the likelihood of HIV/AIDS, increasing the likelihood of conviction of a perpetrator, ensuring the rights of a child and helping to develop a support network for those who need it most. I would be grateful for any donation you can make, no matter how small or large. Each and every contribution will be going towards the provision of safety, support and love for another child. Thank you.
